[The tagline for WeatherWool] Every so often a new material appears out of the ether that shatters all expectations of what was even considered as possible. WeatherWool is such a fabric. It is a 100% woolen performance fabric born entirely of the United States, from the sheep, to the scouring, to the weaving, and finally the finishing. WeatherWool is so unique that it could become the United States' entry into an exclusive club: woolen outerwear fabrics that have come to define national heritage. Think Harris Tweed of Scotland, Casentino fabric of Italy, and the Loden fabric of Austria. Is it really that good? Yes. Hardcore outdoorsman (and women) use it in the USA and Canada and The Navy Seals and other special operations forces use it in Afghanistan. Why is it so good? WeatherWool is an extremely durable and breathable fabric that repels wind, rain, snow, and cold - without any additives or coatings and it drapes well and has a hand reminiscent of cashmere. We chose the humble peacoat as our first garment to use WeatherWool because the peacoat is super versatile for both city and country and pretty much immune to the machinations of style. This is a coat you can wear for decades. The buttons are genuine buffalo horn with laser engraved detail and the center back of the garment is made of wool (as opposed to polyester lining fabric) - a fabric this special deserves the highest level of trims.
"When we started WeatherWool, fabric that met our specifications was simply not available"
Ralph and Debby DiMeo created WeatherWool because a product they knew that should exist, didn't. In the world of high-quality woolen fabrics, there was either luxury or performance, but luxury fabrics weren’t designed for performance in Nature, and the performance fabrics didn't drape or have the hand. Three years of research and development led to the production of WeatherWool Fabric, offering both extreme performance and a soft, rich hand that is a pleasure to wear.
WeatherWool manufacture begins with a very meticulous evaluation of lab test data on the fleece produced by America’s leading Rambouillet and Merino sheep ranchers and breeders. Selected lots are then won at auction at an average price about five times that of typical raw wool. To avoid contamination with inferior fiber, the wool is then scoured (cleaned) immediately after the scouring line itself has been cleaned. The cleaned wool fiber is then custom spun, dyed, and woven on a jacquard loom. Jacquard weaving is a far more expensive process but creates a fabric with a more complex and substantial three-dimensional structure that significantly outperforms fabrics produced on a standard loom.
Weather Wool is meticulous in every detail - the nap makes the fabric softer to the touch, reduces reflectivity, and adds a little to the warmth. It is a directional nap - the fabric is brushed in a single direction to help guide rainwater downward giving the fabric not only a front and back, but also an upside and downside.
Fit and Details
Our best advice is to order your suit jacket/blazer size. This coat is designed to have enough room for modest layering such as a sweater or vest.
